Across four seasons, Noah Hawley's TV spin-off has played brilliant homage to the film, but the small screen version has never quite topped the original. Set in snowy Minnesota – and cheekily claiming to be based on a true story – the film follows Steve Buscemi and Peter Stormare as a pair of bumbling amateur kidnappers who are involved in a doomed extortion plot initiated by mild-mannered car salesman Jerry Lundegaard (William H Macy). The 1996 film is a perfectly crafted thriller that also happens to be one of the pair's most amusing pieces of work, with their offbeat and sometimes twisted sense of humour never far from the surface.
